OVEN BEGINS

12TH YEAR

BY DORA FORBES

Betsy Lippitt and the Washington Sisters will open Oven Productions' 12th year with a concert on September 6.

Lippitt is a versatile musician who sings, plays violin and guitar, and writes and arranges music. A native of Dayton, she studied voice at the CollegeConservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Folk music became part of her artistic repertoire at Cincinnati's Family Owl, where she played with several local groups.

In the early 1970's Lippitt joined a theatre group, Freed Entertainment, that performed rock operas. Later she joined Elberon, a diverse musical group opening for such performers as Kenny Rankin and Leo Kottke.

She later performed extensively in San Francisco and on the West Coast, first as a soloist and later with feminist poet/musician Lal10. She also reunited with Cincinnati-basd Therese Edell, who introduced her to women's music industry. They have appeared together the third, fifth, sixth

and tenth annual Michigan Womyn's Music Festivals, the sixth and tenth National Women's Music Festivals, and the New England Women's Musical Retreat.

She has also appeared, with Edell, or as a soloist, at many colleges, universities and clubs in this country and in Europe.

Sandra and Sharon Washington, twins from Columbus, are a singing duo whose performances combine contemporary, folk and heartfelt sounds reflecting their strong political connections and irreverent humor.

Thus spring they released their first record, In Synch. A single which explores their love of gospel on one side and funk (a capella) on the other, it

is, they say, certainly a must for all record collectors.

Betsy Lippitt and the Washington Sisters will appear at Dobama Theatre, 1846 Coventry Road, at 8 p.m._on Saturday Saturday, September 6. For information, call 371-9714.
